Original published adventure gamebook cover artwork by John Blanche for Darian, Master Magician, part of The Glade of Dreams by Jon Sutherland and Simon Farrell, published in 1987 as part of the innovative Double Game series.
The painting depicts the magician Darian travelling through a mysterious forest, magical energy crackling from his hands. Blanche surrounds the central figure with enormous ancient trees, exposed roots, fungi and dense vegetation, creating a richly imagined and distinctly otherworldly environment. Darian's vivid orange and red costume provides a striking focal point against the darker woodland setting.
Double Game offered an unusual approach to the popular adventure gamebook format. Each adventure consisted of two companion books that could be played separately or simultaneously by two readers, with the protagonists' journeys capable of intersecting. The Glade of Dreams paired Darian, Master Magician with Issel, Warrior King, allowing readers to experience the same fantasy world through two different characters.
John Blanche (British, b. 1948) is one of the most influential figures in British fantasy art. He is particularly celebrated for his pivotal role in establishing the visual identity of Games Workshop and Warhammer. As both an illustrator and art director, his densely detailed, gothic and often surreal imagery helped define the look of the Warhammer universe and influenced generations of fantasy artists and game designers.
Blanche also played an important role in the golden age of British fantasy and adventure gamebooks. His extensive illustration credits include work for Fighting Fantasy, Steve Jackson's Sorcery!, Warlock magazine and numerous fantasy and role-playing publications. His unmistakable combination of intricate detail, strange creatures, medieval imagery and dark fantasy has made his original artwork particularly sought after by collectors of fantasy and gaming art.
