Original published interior comic artwork from What If? #3, page 33, “What If the Avengers Had Never Been?”. A fan-favourite issue featuring a rare Gil Kane script co-written by Jim Shooter. Kane took particular care as penciller, having a fuller vision of what he wanted to accomplish for the issue, with Klaus Janson providing the inks. This page shows an Iron Man-armoured Hank Pym battling the Incredible Hulk. Several original word balloons have been lost over the years, revealing areas of the original artwork that were obscured in the published comic.

Gil Kane (American, 1926–2000) was one of the most important American comic-book artists of the Silver Age, co-creating the modern Green Lantern and Atom for DC and contributing extensively to Marvel titles including The Amazing Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Conan the Barbarian and numerous covers. His dynamic anatomy, dramatic foreshortening and distinctive page design had a lasting influence on superhero art. Klaus Janson (German-American, b. 1952) is an acclaimed inker, penciller and teacher, particularly celebrated for his work with Frank Miller on Daredevil and The Dark Knight Returns. His expressive brushwork has made him one of the most recognisable inkers in modern American comics.
