Original painted cover artwork by Fred Gambino for the VHS release of Jackie Chan’s 1986 action-adventure classic Armour of God, distributed by IPD. Painted as a substantial wraparound composition, the artwork brings together Jackie Chan and other principal characters with scenes of action and adventure from the movie.
Armour of God stars Jackie Chan as Asian Hawk, an adventurer and former musician drawn into a dangerous search for pieces of the legendary Armour of God. Chan appears alongside Alan Tam, Rosamund Kwan and Lola Forner in a production that combines martial arts, comedy, elaborate stunt work and international locations.
The movie became one of the important early international successes of Jackie Chan, whose extraordinary physical stunt work was already establishing a style of action cinema distinctly his own. Armour of God also became famous for one of the most serious accidents of Chan’s career, when a stunt involving a jump to a tree resulted in a fall that caused a life-threatening skull injury.
Gambino’s painting was created specifically for an era when original painted artwork played a major role in selling movies from the shelves of video stores.
