An exceptional piece of cinema history: Enzo Nistri’s original finished movie poster artwork for the first Italian theatrical release of Godzilla in 1957.

Nistri’s dramatic composition presents Godzilla towering above a city engulfed in flames, translating the monster that had first appeared in Ishirō Honda’s groundbreaking 1954 Japanese film into the grand tradition of hand-painted Italian movie poster art.

This is the final piece that was published on Italian posters. Based on auction records located to date, only preliminary or concept artwork relating to the first Godzilla movie has previously been offered at auction. Oberon Auctions believes this to be the first finished original final movie poster artwork for the first Godzilla movie ever offered at auction worldwide.

The significance extends beyond the poster itself. The 1954 film introduced Godzilla, one of the most recognizable characters in the history of cinema and the foundation of a franchise that has continued across films, television, comics, toys and popular culture for more than seventy years. Nistri’s artwork belongs to the earliest period in which Godzilla was being introduced to audiences outside Japan.

Enzo Nistri was one of the leading artists of the golden age of Italian movie poster illustration, working extensively for major international studios and distributors from the 1950s onward. His work is distinguished by accomplished portraiture, dramatic composition and a painterly approach that transformed commercial movie advertising into highly collectible original art.

Nistri created Italian poster artwork for an extraordinary range of major films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and North by Northwest, Blake Edwards’ Breakfast at Tiffany’s, John Ford’s The Searchers, the Marilyn Monroe classic How to Marry a Millionaire, Planet of the Apes, Notorious, Rope, Funeral in Berlin starring Michael Caine, and Marlowe starring James Garner. His work for North by Northwest and Vertigo is particularly celebrated among collectors of Hitchcock poster art.
