Charles Vess – The Amazing Spider-Man #277 “Cry of the Wendigo” Black Costume Cover Original Art, 1986
Year: 1986
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Published: June 1986 – The Amazing Spider-Man #277
Medium: Ink on paper
Original published cover art by Charles Vess for The Amazing Spider-Man #277, featuring Spider-Man in his iconic black costume protecting a young girl beneath the looming Wendigo spirit. Vess both penciled and inked the cover.
The black-costume appearance adds particular collector appeal. Introduced in 1984, Spider-Man's black suit became one of the most important visual changes in the character's history and was later established as the alien symbiote that ultimately became Venom. By 1986 the costume had become an established and highly recognizable part of the Spider-Man era, making original cover art depicting the black-suited Spider-Man especially desirable.
The issue also contains Vess's 12-page “Cry of the Wendigo”, which he wrote, penciled and inked, making #277 an unusually strong Charles Vess Spider-Man issue.
Artist: Charles Vess
Charles Vess is an acclaimed American fantasy and comic artist known for Spider-Man, Sandman, Stardust, Swamp Thing, The Books of Magic and The Book of Ballads and Sagas. His Spider-Man work also includes Web of Spider-Man and the graphic novel Spider-Man: Spirits of the Earth.
